Asuncion is the capital of Paraguay, and compared to Concepcion it was very much alive and full of noise.
We wandered the markets and the town centre, did a touch of shopping and dawdled through the plazas.
Paraguayan flags waving in the breeze:
We enjoyed lunch at the very popular Bar Lido, and sampled some of the local Sopa Paraguaya (not soup, but more like a scone), along with some steak and vegetable dishes (not pictured):
Some of the civic buildings were reasonably magnificent:
We also visited a couple of art galleries with a mixture of very amateur to quite good artworks.
While wandering around the city we noticed a stark difference between the rich and the poor - rich suburbs surrounding the city and plywood shacks in the downtown area.
Our hostel was full so we didn't stay long, but on the recommendation of the staff we bought a bottle of caña (a local spirit) to enjoy before we jumped on our bus to Argentina. When we were sitting outside a petrol station with our cana in sight, a very friendly man, Luis, struck up a conversation with us. He bought us a bottle of Coke and showed us how to mix a drink of Caña y Cola. Before we knew it he had picked up his eldest son and had us in the back of his ute to show us his house, which was muy lindo. It was great to meet his family and he showed us some photos of his estancia (ranch) located in the Chaco region. He then hurriedly dropped us off at the bus station just in time to catch our bus to Resistencia, Argentina. We will have to visit again!
(Spectacular photos in front of Luis' casa to come)
